A Toronto man is in custody after ramming a police cruiser in his car, nearly striking two police officers as well.
The accused was attempting to evade arrest after police responded to Frederica Street West Sunday morning because of a suspicious vehicle in a parking lot.
As officers approached, they learned the driver was on a court-ordered release with conditions not to operate a motor-vehicle.
They then asked the man to get out of the vehicle, when he became difficult.
Police attempted to de-escalate the situation, but the man turned on the vehicle and fled striking the cruiser and just missing the two officers.
The man left at a high speed, and police called off the chase because of safety concerns.
He was found shortly after, and taken to police headquarters.
The 25-year-old faces the following charges:
- Two counts of Assaulting a Peace Officer with a Weapon
- Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
- Flight from Peace Officer
- Resist Peace Officer
- Failure to Stop After Accident
- Failure to Comply with a Release Order
The release conditions were connected to charges laid by the Thunder Bay Police Service on Dec. 19, 2020.
Those charges included Operation of a Motor Vehicle While Impaired, Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon in a Motor Vehicle, and Carrying a Concealed Weapon.He will be back before a judge on December 23rd.
