City Considering A New Skate Park

Council will be making a decision regarding the former Dease Pool site, which was voted to be demolished in 2019.

If the city decides so on Monday, the process of building a skate park at the site will begin. This would be the second major skate park in Thunder Bay.

This comes after various runs of public consultation, including a session that was held at the park in September, which saw dozens attend and share their thoughts.

“We can look to the demographics, look to the needs and the service gaps, and address those through infrastructure development,” explains McKellar Ward Councillor Brian Hamilton. “It’s a very exciting project. This is a very big deal not just for residents, but for all citizens of Thunder Bay because that service package will be available for all. The addition of a skate park is a very big deal because it would be one of two skate plazas in the city.”

Some of the other ideas that came out of public consultation include a tennis court, or a hockey or basketball boarded in rink. If approved, the city will work in consultation with the Thunder Bay Skateboard Coalition.

Along with the park itself, city council will also be discussing traffic calming measures for Dease Street.

The redevelopment of Dease Park is set to kick off in 2022.

In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
