The three accused in a 2018 beating death deserve longer sentences.
In a statement released Wednesday, the Chief and Council of the Keewaywin First Nation said there’s something wrong with the system to give what they called light sentences against those charged in the death of 25-year-old Ashley McKay.
24-year-old Terryl Michon was handed a six and a half year sentence plus three years probation on Tuesday, but with credit for time served she will have two more years left.
Marlene Kwandibens plead guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter and received a eight year sentence on November 17th while Darren Oombash will appear in court later this month to answer to the current second-degree murder charge.
The statement noted that the three individuals showed little to no remorse for their actions and the sentences handed down were completely unacceptable.
