Council Looking For Designated Truck Route Guidance

Procedure steps will be worked on by city staff in the ongoing discussion about the Designate Truck Route.

In a conversation that lasted nearly an hour Monday night, All eight present members of council voted in favour of an amended motion by At Large’s Trevor Giertuga.

The Designated Truck Route would direct heavy trucks onto Highway 11/17, and ban them from Dawson Road and Arthur Street.

The original ask from Giertuga was looking for an update relating to the presentation of a by-law including the associated timelines for re-presentation, however the change noted that administration look into the current status of the by-law and options relating to how the by-law can be finalized including a notice of motion to rescind.

Giertuga agreed with the amendment, but argued the point made by At-Large Councillor Mark Bentz that his motion was a re-hash of the issue.

“I will re-iterate that Councillor Bentz and Councillor Hamilton both flip flopped on this decision, so perhaps if we had done our proper research, we wouldn’t be in this position,” Giertuga noted.

Bentz exercised a Point of Privilege, adding that re-considering a stand is not a sign of doing improper research.

Earlier, Bentz made the point that some around the table didn’t feel that the solution was to put all the truck traffic on the Expressway.

Council previously defeated the by-law idea back in June of 2020.

Mayor Bill Mauro as well as Neebing Councillor Cody Fraser and Westfort Councillor Kristen Oliver were absent in the vote.
