30th Annual CIBC Run For The Cure

Thunder Bay participates in the annual CIBC Run for the Cure for the 25th year, this being the 30th it was a national event.

Organizers were set up at the Royal Legion Track, and all Thunder Bay residents were welcome to participate in support of a good cause.

This is the second year that event was forced into a virtual format, with the opening ceremonies being live-streamed rather than a full in-person event.

Run Director Bonnie Tittaferrante explains the importance of the event locally, and across the country.

“This event does a lot of research of course, and we’re always looking for improvements and the cure,” explains Tittaferrante. “This event also really supports those going through breast cancer, those that have been through breast cancer, and helping the families, and it’s just a coming together and showing we’re here for them and it’s not a secret anymore, and we’re here to support them.”

Tittaferrante goes on to explain the scope of the event.

“It’s all across Canada, and it’s in a lot of the major cities and a lot of the smaller cities,” says Tittaferrante. “I’m not sure how many sites there are exactly, but we go from the east coast to the west coast.”

Locally, the event has raised around $26,000 so far but often sees a bit of a boost after the run concludes.

Run Directors in Thunder Bay have said that hopefully next year can be an in-person event without capacity limits, but of course will depend entirely on the pandemic.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
