Run For The Cure Hopes For Last-Minute Turnout

Organizers are hopeful as the Canadian Cancer Society is marks the 30th annual CIBC Run for the Cure in Thunder Bay.

The run is happening virtually this year, and local organizers aim to raise $46,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Run Director Bonnie Tittaferrante says around 150 people were registered as of Friday morning. “Normally, we’d be probably at about 250 by now, so we’re hoping there are a lot of last-minute people that maybe want to come out when they wake up on Sunday,” Tittaferrante says.

She explains you can still sign up to participate wherever you are, or do part of the run at its usual location.

She and her fellow Run Director will be at the Legion Track outside Delaney Arena from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm Sunday. “We’re just trying people who want to come out and walk the original route at any time they want,” she says.

They hope to be able to get back to normal next year, admitting there seems to be less interest in the run this year compared to the first year of the pandemic.

If you missed the run or aren’t participating yourself, she notes you can still donate online on the Run for the Cure website.

While there is no official start time for the event, the Canadian Cancer Society is holding its opening ceremonies at 11 am.
