Mayor Bill Mauro is calling for city staff to develop COVID-19 vaccine policies to follow a new requirement from the province.
He is bringing a motion to City Council Monday night, and says he made his directions deliberately open-ended so that staff can look at things that aren’t mentioned in the provincial government’s Directive #6.
It requires hospitals and home and community care service providers to create vaccine policies by September 7th.
“They’ll draft the policy, and when it comes back at that point, Council can take a deeper dive and decide if we need to go farther,” he says.
Mauro indicates if the motion is approved, staff will also look at whether municipalities can mandate vaccines for workers.
It also asks for city staff to report back on future health and safety steps for staff who deal with the public.
Council will consider the motion Monday night, and if it’s approved, city staff will report back on September 13th.
