The Thunder Bay District Catholic School Board (TBCDSB) showed their appreciation to the local health unit for everything they have done during the pandemic.
Local Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janet DeMille was presented with a 20-foot-long banner Wednesday that features hundreds of signatures and thank you messages.
“She was absolutely instrumental, her and her whole team have been absolutely amazing throughout the whole pandemic,” explains Superintendent of Education Allison Sargent. “Through the closing of schools, and the opening of schools, and the closing of schools again, through the vaccination rollout.”
Dr. DeMille was visibly moved by the banner presentation.
“It was very touching,” admits DeMille. “I was caught off guard, I knew it was happening but I wasn’t expecting this huge banner and all those signatures, and I appreciate all the effort they put in. Honestly, this was a very difficult year and a very unusual year. We saw school boards like the Thunder Bay District Catholic School Board really step up and take on this challenge including teachers and staff.”
Dr. DeMille goes on to say it was a team effort with the school board in ensuring the safety of students and staff.
“There was a lot of connectivity,” explains DeMille. “We already worked a lot with schools but this certainly ramped it up. Calling one another on the evenings or weekends when there was an exposure in the school.”
The board is expecting the province’s return to school plan sometime in July.
