Free city transit in Thunder Bay is not a reality yet, but transit officials are still considering the possibility.
City Council will hear an update on transit fares and recreation fees tonight.
Back in March, they asked to hear some options for free bus rides at certain times or for certain groups like seniors.
The memo from Transit Services Division Manager Brad Loroff says his department has met with staff from the Thunder Bay District Social Services Board and the Lakehead Social Planning Council. He says they need to discuss this more and will involve the group Poverty Free Thunder Bay.
Loroff says transit officials are also coordinating with the Recreation and Culture division’s fee planning, taking cues from cities like Edmonton. Edmonton offers discounted recreation programs, and residents who submit an application are automatically considered for low-cost transit passes.
Council will get another update by the end of September this year, and the final proposals will be submitted by the end of the year so they can be considered in the 2022 budget.
