LU To Open Law Clinic

Lakehead University is going to offer free immigration and refugee law services.

The Bora Laskin Faculty of Law and the Thunder Bay Multicultural Association will offer that at a new legal clinic starting in September.

That’s thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Law Foundation of Ontario’s Access to Justice Fund.

The clinic will be run by law students supervised by a Jennifer Dagsvik, a local immigration and refugee lawyer who also lectures at the law school.

“The immigrant and refugee population in Northwestern Ontario is growing and communities throughout the region have been working to attract more newcomers,” Dagsvik said in a statement. “Until now, though – and unlike in larger centres – free clinical services dedicated to immigration and refugee law have not been available. The Newcomer Legal Clinic plans to fill that access-to-justice gap.”

It will also put together a new program offering free business law services to refugees looking to start a new business.
