Dryden Mine Worker Wins Thunder Bay 50/50

Dryden’s Vic Zajarny is the winner of June’s Thunder Bay 50/50 draw and takes home $481,085.

The winning call was a long time coming as Zajarny works in a mine three quarters of a mile underground.

The winner told organizers Friday that there is internet and he was able to see the text from Glenn Craig, the President & CEO of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation.

Zajarny had a personal reason for supporting the draw.

“About 10 years ago my wife was flown to Thunder Bay’s ICU. I have only good things to say about your Hospital. You’re top notch,” said Zajarny. “You saved my wife’s life, and I will always be grateful for that.”

The mine worker will use the jackpot to pay off some debts, then save the rest for retirement.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
