Thunder Bay police services board turning away from fencing around the Balmoral Street station, an idea raised due to safety issues.
Once Mayor Bill Mauro stated his objection to the over $600,000 price, Board member Michael Power agreed, considering they’re looking at a new potential Headquarters.
“If we’re speaking with one voice and the organization ultimately wants the new facility, then I think we all acknowledge the $600,000-plus cost being directed toward the new facility as opposed to a sunk cost, is probably the smart move,” noted Power.
Chief Sylvie Hauth added they can look at fencing that would limit certain areas. “Something we can give consideration, to see if there’s something temporary, where we can slow down, or impede, easy access to the parking lot, without impeding day to day operations.”
The police board also approved having the $56-million cost of the new building in net HST rebate included in Thunder Bay’s next budget, instead of $6.1-million in land acquisition put in the budget.
