Councillors Forge Ahead With Turf Facility

The multi-use indoor turf facility is before Thunder Bay city council again Monday night.

On the agenda, a further look at companies that may be interested in putting in contract bids.

The five At-large councillors discussed the facility at their virtual townhall June 11, and fielded a question about why the topic is still on the table.

Aldo Ruberto pointed out he and his colleagues represent the whole community, and not people on social media who may be against it.

“I know that the majority I’ve spoken to, for the last seven years, not the last year, have wanted this facility,” remarked Ruberto.

Rebecca Johnson noted it is part of the city’s plan, after council approved it in 2019.

“If we choose to have someone come forward, with whatever that process is, with a notice of motion, then we can have it removed, if it fact council decides that. But we still have that motion and it has to be dealt with,” Johnson said.

Councillor Trevor Giertuga likened it to the Designated Truck Route, it’s just been derailed, but will continue.

It was pointed out all potential contract bids are available for public viewing, with Giertuga adding there is one exception.

“Sometimes we get proposals that don’t even meet the minimum requirements, or they don’t have the financial capability to do something like this. So it’s not even pertinent that we, or the public, see it,” stated Giertuga.
