Expansion of Eye on Street Program

City council will look at expanding the Eye on the Street Program in Thunder Bay.

Approval by council Monday night would mean more cameras throughout the city, and more advanced technology.

Chris Adams, the Director of Communication and Technology, explained what this expansion could look like in the near future.

“Expand the existing locations to 20,” said Adams. “In fact, phase two, if we can get that going in the next couple years, we’ll see that expanded even to 40 cameras.”

The Director goes on to say the assistance this program provides police is helping to make the city a safer place to live and work.

“More investigations, more evidence that comes forward, and it will also create more public safety,” noted Adams.

The new cameras if approved would be considerably more effective than what was installed initially in the city after the birth of the program in 2005.

The modern technology will replace 12 of the current 13 cameras already in the city, and add eight more if approved by council.
