Councillor Wants 8 At-Large Members Only

An At-large city councillor wants the size of council to be reduced to eight At-Large members only.

Peng You will put forth his motion Monday night to his colleagues, an idea that would leave the choice up to voters in next year’s municipal election on the ballot, something that’s getting mixed response from his council colleagues.

“Some people say ‘yes’, some people say ‘no’. I think that’s normal. But definitely, everyone agrees we need a change. The general public tells us that, and they really support it,” says You.

The city councillor says he doesn’t want to wait until 2023, when another similar proposal comes before council that city staff is currently reviewing. “I’ve been thinking about what is the best way we can do this? So that’s why this has come up, I’ve been working with the city clerk, because the pandemic is dragging this out quite long. Finally, I said I want this motion on the floor.”

The city councillor adds he’d like to see the potential eight councillors assigned to specific areas of the city.
