The refurbishing of the CN Pedestrian Overpass in Thunder Bay is nearing its conclusion.
Project Engineer with the city Mike Vogrig, says painting is the name of the game right now.
“They’ve applied the first two coatings to it, and now they’re working on the third coating.” mentioned Vogrig. “So once that has been tested, they’ll be ripping down the enclosure and then moving on to the second portion, the larger portion, that was taken down this year. They’ll have to put three coatings on that as well.”
Tarps have been set up at the worksite for the past month to help prevent rain from affecting the coats of paint being applied. The overpass, which has been blue, is being re-painted grey.
The price tag was originally set at $1.3 million, though it is expected costs will near $2 million by the time the project is completed. Vogrig added it is unlikely this number will rise again before the overpass is operational again.
“We’ve kind of gone through all the potential extras when we did our first analysis there last year, we found some of the problems. As it stands now, that is still holding true,” noted Vogrig.
The overpass is scheduled to be put back up in August, and should be open to the public shortly after that.
