Thunder Bay Product Remembers National Stage

It may have been fourteen years ago, but Thunder Bay’s Adam Sergerie still remembers being on the ice at the 2007 RBC Cup in Prince George, British Columbia.

The now teacher in Northern Alberta was a member of the Selkirk Steelers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, who won the provincial Turnbull Cup before going the full seven games needed to knock off the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League to earn a spot in the national tournament.

Hockey Canada this week unveiled hosts for a trio of events set to return in 2022, including the Junior ‘A’ Centennial Cup to take place in Estevan, Saskatchewan.

“It was an awesome experience,” recalled Sergerie. “We had our room and a couple of practices before the tournament started. You quickly see the best teams in the country battling it out.”

The Steelers lost all four of their games in the 2007 RBC Cup round robin and were outscored 13-6 in the process.

“It was like we showed up and we were gone before we knew it,” said Sergerie. “It happened so fast, you almost forget to appreciate and enjoy every moment that you have there.”

The 2007 RBC Cup Field

  • Aurora Tigers (OJHL) Champions
  • Prince George Spruce Kings (BCHL)
  • Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL)
  • Pembroke Lumber Kings (CCHL)
  • Selkirk Steelers (MJHL)
  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
