City Considers Free Menstrual Products

City facilities could soon see free menstrual products, if a pilot project is approved at City Council.

They would be provided in buildings like recreational centres and libraries.

Northwood Ward Councillor Shelby Ch’ng proposed the project late in 2019, and hopes to see support from fellow councillors at Monday’s meeting.

Councillor Ch’ng stresses this is not solely for people who cannot afford the products, or simply for the sake of convenience.

“It doesn’t matter your socio-economic background. If you find yourself without the proper sanitary products, it can be very distracting and quite stressful,” she says. “These types of conversations are happening, and it’s understood this is the way to go forward for mental and physical health for those who menstruate.”

Councillor Ch’ng is hopeful she will get support from council to green light the pilot project.
