Ship Replaces Aging Louis S. St-Laurent

Thunder Bay will be helping to build a polar ice breaker for the Canadian Coast Guard.

Hamilton based Heddle shipyards spokesperson Ted Kirkpatrick tells us the type of ship was announced last week by the federal government, although work has not started yet locally.

“From a logistical point of view, Thunder Bay makes a lot of sense, to fabricate and ship larger modules and components,” says Kirkpatrick.

Sections of the ship will be built in different cities nationwide. “There’s still a lot of work to be done in terms of the design of the vessel, and understanding what facility is going to build what, and what makes the most sense. Thunder Bay will be contributing to it.”

Once the parts are made, they will be sent to the Seaspan facility in Vancouver where the ship is to be assembled.

In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
