O-P Council Passes Anti-Racism Bill

Bit of controversy over an anti-racism motion for Oliver-Paipoonge council.

Mayor Lucy Kloosterhuis tells us sometimes she is surprised by community reaction to items, such as the Day of Action Against Asian Racism.

It’s a motion that started in Burnaby, BC, and it came across council’s agenda recently, which they decided to vote on.

The mayor recalls one councillor’s comment, wondering why there isn’t a day for white people. Councillor Allan Vis stated everyone wants to have a day, and thinks there are enough days, so this wasn’t necessary.

“It was a comment made by Councillor Vis, and I truly believe he has explained himself well to the public and the press, as to his reaction. Perhaps it wasn’t made as clear at the council meeting,” pointed out Kloosterhuis.

She’s also ready to move on from the vote.

“I know our municipality, the people that live here are inclusive of all nationalities, and do not agree with racism toward anyone. I know they would approve of us passing this proclamation,” said the mayor.

Councillor Vis was the only one to vote against it.
