Back To The Regional COVID-19 Approach

Local provincial politicians want the governing Conservatives to return to the colour-coded COVID-19 response framework.

Premier Doug Ford first put Ontario in lockdown as of April 1st, which was followed by a stay at home order on April 7th that was extended to last until at least May 20th.

In addition, officials made the decision on April 12th to move all elementary and secondary schools to remote learning until at least April 30th.

“Parents are having an extraordinary challenge as related to keeping their children at home and remote learning,” stressed Thunder Bay-Superior North Liberal MPP Michael Gravelle. “I also think we should be opening up our outdoor spaces so that people can be more mobile again.”

Thunder Bay-Atikokan NDP MPP Judith Monteith-Farrell added there are times to go province-wide with public health measures, but the local numbers don’t support that now.

“When we exploding with cases, there were things that we need to put in place and when we aren’t then that needs to be addressed. Our schools have been closed for a lot longer than other parts of the province and now it’s not warranted.”

Heading into Friday April 23 the Thunder Bay District Health Unit reported a pair of outbreaks and 59 active cases
