City Council To Review Tax Relief

Council will have a look at taxes, with a few measures needing its approval before administration moves forward.

Director of Revenue Kathleen Cannon is bringing forward four items related to the subject at tonight’s meeting.

There are a few alterations that administration will recommend to council. First, they are looking for council’s approval to cancel, reduce or refund taxes at a total of $16,068.26.

When it comes to the tax exemption for property use by veterans, there is a motion to include all properties owned and occupied by the Polish Combatants Association that qualify under the Assessment Act, while at the same time, removing Royal Canadian Legion properties that are now exempt under the Act.

“Administration moves forward with tax registration unless council directs us otherwise,” Cannon said. “In addition the application for cancellation, reduction of refund of taxes needs the thumbs up of council to proceed.”

The Director of Revenue added the pandemic did have an impact on the delivery of these reports.

“The cancellation, reduction or refund of taxes… we’re only required to bring it to council once a year,” Cannon noted. “However, to assist taxpayers in getting their cancellations on their accounts sooner we usually present that on quarterly basis. When it comes to the property tax accounts with 2019 arrears, we usually have that ready for March last year, but that did not happen until August. There were delays last year, but we are slowly getting back on track.
