Some optimism from the district’s top doctor in the midst of a COVID crisis in the city.
It comes as the number of cases so far in March has hit 885 compared to 627 in all of February.
Thunder Bay District Health Unit Medical Officer Dr. Janet DeMille points out the seven-day average of cases in the district seems to have stabilized to about 230 cases per a population of 100,000,
“I’m really hopeful that over the next seven days that we’ll see more concrete evidence of a decline in cases,” DeMille told our newsroom.
The health official adds the seven-day average is still too high to warrant a loosing of government restrictions in our region which she believes should be below 100 cases per 100,000.
Meantime, DeMille is happy with the vaccine rollout touting the more than 20,000 doses which have been administered in the district since it began in early February.
She notes while some of those are second doses most are first.
There has been a push to administer 5,500 doses this week, but DeMille does not expect it to reach that number next week.
