Border Cats Not Playing In 2021

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has forced the hand of the Thunder Bay Border Cats.

The Northwoods League club announced Friday that they will sit out the 2021 campaign, citing the ongoing uncertainty of travel across the border and outdoor gathering numbers for Thunder Bay.

“The Border Cats organization and its parent company Grand Slam Sports & Entertainment, remains committed to Thunder Bay and it is our full intention to return for the 2022 season,” says Border Cats President Dave Valente. “We truly appreciate the patience and understanding of our loyal fans, corporate partners, coaches and players and wish to thank the Northwoods League staff and its affiliated members for their assistance during this very difficult process.”

Northwoods League President Ryan Voz notes while it’s unfortunate that the Border Cats aren’t playing, the focus now shifts to giving the players an opportunity to play with another team.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
