Rising Cost Of Turf Facility Fuels Debate

The debate over the proposed indoor turf facility again is focusing on the cost.

What began at around the $30 million mark is now inching closer to $40 million with Mayor Bill Mauro acknowledging the unease of some councillors.

“I think there has been some concern that I’m hearing a little bit about that you know it came in a bit over what…it was estimated to be so I think there are a few that are concerned at this point,” admitted the mayor.

Mauro stills supports the project and is looking forward to the debate adding “There will be a discussion Monday night and we’ll see exactly where it goes.”

Councillors are being asked to approve up to $39.19 million in spending for the project which includes about $2 million to account for unexpected costs.

City administration is recommending the contract be awarded to Tom Jones Corporation of Thunder Bay.

The search for an indoor turf facility was spurred on following the collapse of the Sportsdome on the CLE Grounds in a November 2016 snowstorm.

It threw the soccer community into chaos since both men’s and women’s clubs were forced to cancel their seasons because there was no place to play.
