What’s Open And Closed During Lockdown

It’s the beginning of Thunder Bay being back in the Grey-Lockdown stage of the Provincial COVID-19 framework.

While it’s not known how long it will last at this juncture, the city is temporarily closing a number of facilities to try and mitigate the growth of cases.

“Our approach is to continue to provide services where we are able and where not restricted by the Province,” indicates City Manager Norm Gale. “As always, our highest priority is the health and safety of employees, residents and anyone who uses City facilities and services.”

What’s Still Available

  • Youth Inclusion Program supports will continue virtually as well as contactless food security programs
  • City Council meetings will continue to happen virtually
  • Avoid all non-essential trips on Thunder Bay Transit and Lift+ Specialized Transit
  • Outdoor rinks and trails will still be open with the capacity at boarded rinks remaining at 25. Organized games of any kind, including hockey/shinny, continue to be prohibited
  • Trails and sliding hills remain open

What’s Closed

  • Centennial Botanical Conservatory
  • Canada Games Complex
  • Churchill Pool (Volunteer Pool remains closed during the pandemic)
  • Arenas (Fort William Gardens, Neebing, Delaney, Port Arthur, Grandview, Current River)
  • Older Adult Centres, with the exception of take-out food only available from the River Street Café for senior food security
  • Community Centres
  • Kinsmen Youth Centre
  • Baggage Building Arts Centre
  • Water Garden Pavilion
  • All in-person programs, including the Neighbourhood Recreation Program in schools
  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
