NDP Propose Abuse Reporting Law

The NDP propose to make it a duty for healthcare workers to report suspected cases of abuse or neglect of vulnerable adults.

A bill from Health Critic France Gélinas received First Reading this week with unanimous support in the Legislature.

Gélinas says it’s an issue that arises every week within the health care sector.

“The abuser, I would say, gets reported to the police. The police handle the abuser. But the support for the person who had lived with the abuse or the neglect right now falls flat,” she explains.

Under Gélinas’ bill, an investigation team would be formed to help identify potential cases.

Her proposal is to expand existing legislation that requires health care workers to report suspected cases of neglect or abuse of children.
