Priority Areas for Safety In Thunder Bay

Six priority challenges have been identified in the ongoing work on preventing crime in Thunder Bay.

Crime Prevention Co-ordinator Lee-Ann Chevrette reported to council Monday night that the Steering Committee for the Community Safety and Well-Being planning has approved the challenges that’ll be the focus going forward.

  1. Racism and discrimination
  2. Housing
  3. Mental Well-Being
  4. Poverty Reduction and Financial Empowerment
  5. Community violence with a focus on gender-based violence
  6. Supports for children, youth and families

Chevrette says the challenges were selected based on a number of factors:

  • Review of both key challenges and priorities identified during the Phase 1 community engagement/
    consultation process
  • Community-level data which includes crime, community safety, health and well-being

Phase 2 Community Engagement Process will run until March 26th.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
