Potential COVID-19 Exposure At Westgate

Officials are going on offense to deal with a potential exposure to the novel coronavirus inside Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute.

A letter was sent out to parents and caregivers Monday indicating that both the Thunder Bay District Health Unit and Lakehead Public Schools are taking what they’re referring to as a ‘precautionary approach’ to exposures in the school or on buses.

“Public health is identifying who would be considered close contacts of the individual with COVID-19,” said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janet DeMille. “Parents or caregivers of students in the impacted class/cohort will be contacted directly by a public health nurse and give instructions about they need to do.”

The Medical Officer further indicated in the letter that anyone else in the school setting that doesn’t get a call from a public health official doesn’t need to get tested for COVID-19.
