Thunder Bay city council has voted unanimously in favour of the Private Lead Water Service Replacement program.
The program will offer a $3,000 interest free load to remove the pipes with the money coming from the Stabilization Fund.
The total of the program will be $1.35 million, which would be a raise from the 2020 program that totaled $100,000.
City staff reported to council Monday that there are currently 24 active loan applications, 18 of which have been completed at this time with the other six being finalized.
All loans advanced thus far time have been 5 year terms, although it’s estimated that 10% of loans will be 10 year terms over the life of the program.
At Large councillor Rebecca Johnson, in previous comments to Acadia Broadcasting, stressed this has nothing to do with the leaky copper pipe problem.
