Officials are reporting three more cases of COVID-19 at St. Martin Elementary School.
Originally one person was identified by the District Health Unit as COVID-19 positive, but the virus has since infected three others and their cohorts.
TBDHU notes in all these cases, the virus was acquired outside of the school setting and there’s no evidence that the virus has spread within the school setting.
In a release, the health unit says parents or caregivers of students in the classes were sent home Wednesday and will be contacted directly by a public health nurse with instructions about what happens next.
“I recognize that events like this can cause significant concern and distress for families. These are challenging times,” says Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janet DeMille. “I want to reassure you that public health will continue to monitor and assess for any evidence of spread in the school setting and will take all necessary measures with the school and the school board to manage the situation.”
Everyone else in the school setting who is not deemed a close contact and therefore not specifically contacted by public health, would not be considered at elevated risk and doesn’t require testing because of this situation at this time.
