Apparently We’ve Suffered Enough!

First off, I had no idea that this award even existed until today, secondly, I’m glad I don’t know any of the past winners work!!!

Back in 1993, the Literary Review set up an award called the ‘Bad Sex In Fiction’ award. It was awarded to authors who had the absolute worst depictions of sex in what was an otherwise good book. Past winners include the alternative rock star Morrissey, as well as Tom Wolfe, Giles Coren, AA Gill and Melvyn Bragg. Looks like most of the past winners have been men, not sure if that’s a theme or a handicap of some sort in male writers! In any case, this year the judges of the prize decided to call the awards off since they have decided that the public has suffered enough and that we didn’t need to suffer through reading bad sex scenes as well!

I’m thankful that this award was brought to my attention, since now I have something to look forward to in 2021: Bad Sex In Fiction! Actually, I might skip this one.

If you’re curious about the award and it’s past winners, you can check out all of the details here.
