Police Add Pressure To Stop Impaired Driving

A staggering number of impaired driving charges is mobilizing Thunder Bay police to further action of existing enforcement of laws.

Constable Mark Cattani tells us with the Festive Ride Campaign starting Wednesday, they will be publicizing the names of offenders, as there are 251 violations this year so far. “We needed to think outside the box, and come up with something that will deter people, perhaps at the last moment before they drive. We needed something that’s going to be firm and effective.”

The police constable adds they have tried other techniques such as education programs, visiting schools, and zone blitzes.

“This is an extra layer of deterrent that we are adding to the enforcement. We are hoping this will prevent people from driving impaired in the first place,” says the constable.

He points out in 2018 there was a revamping of impaired driving laws, giving police more tools to investigate cases.
