Thunder Bay Has New Fire Chief

Thunder Bay has finished its’ search for a new fire chief.

Greg Hankkio has taken over the role, previously held by John Hay.

The new Chief had been in the Acting Chief role since October 2019, when he took over from Hay. Hankkio started his career with the Thunder Bay Fire Service as a fire fighter in 1991, and was appointed deputy chief in 2007.

City manager Norm Gale says Hankkio is experienced, dedicated, and loves this city. Gale further says the new chief brings exemplary leadership and professional skills to the important role of overseeing our highly trained, professional fire and rescue service.

The city adds the final choice was made following an open selection.

The city manager, nor anyone else at the city has commented on why John Hay is no longer with the service.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
