Sale Of OPG Station Inches Closer

Ontario Power Generation expects the sale of its Thunder Bay Generating Station to be completed before year’s end.

OPG spokesperson Tom Kurtz explains they are about two months away from getting the deal done with the potential buyer.

Kurtz tells us “We expect by sometime in December to finalize the agreement including the conditions attached to it and then we expect to have possession” in the first quarter of next year.

The name of the potential buyer along with any plans for the sprawling facility are being kept under wraps.

“The proponent is contemplating a number of different possibilities for the site. Those of course are confidential at this time until we finalize the agreement of purchase and sale,” notes Kurtz.

The OPG generating station on Mission Island began operations as a coal fired plant in 1963. It was converted to running on advanced biomass after the provincial government ordered it to stop burning coal in 2014.

The plant was officially shut down in 2018 and ever since OPG has been trying to find a buyer at the request of The City of Thunder Bay.
