NWMO Continues Focus On Site Selection

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization is still waiting for the go ahead to resume field work in the Ignace area.

The group has hit the pause button on the potential underground nuclear waste storage project.

To date, the NWMO has successfully drilled a number of boreholes to get an understanding of the geology in each area it’s considered.

Director of Media and Stakeholder Relations Bradley Hammond explains they have also launched an ongoing environmental baseline monitoring program.

“We’re asking people in the northwest to share information about the plants and animals and the environment around them so we can get a strong baseline understanding and get further information to ensure that we are protecting people and the environment,” Hammond says.

The organization has narrowed its choices in Canada down to the Ignace area and South Bruce in southern Ontario.
