UPDATE: Hockey In Thunder Bay This Weekend

The Kam River Fighting Walleye set to host 48 players at the Thunder Bay Tournament Centre on Mountain Road.

There will be kids from all over Western Canada as well as players from the Greater Toronto Area and, of course, Northwestern Ontario.

“To see all of this come to fruition, to see the guys arrive in Thunder Bay and to see all of the puzzle pieces finally coming together is pretty exciting for sure” says Team President Derek Geddes.

Of the 48 players, the staff hopes to get down to between 25 and 30 players.

Geddes discusses the health measures in place: “We’ll have a monitor where the players come in. That’ll allow us to check their temperature before they enter. Everybody in the arena, including players, will be wearing masks.”

The first sign-in is at 1:00 p.m. Friday with all of the festivities coming to an end Sunday afternoon.

League officials and higher ups with the teams met this past Monday with the goal to get off a 2020/2021 campaign with fans in the stands started November 14th.

“Both the Thief River Falls (Norskies) and Wisconsin (Lumberjacks) realize that there is going to be a time where they may need to fall on the sword and call it a year. That will allow the Canadian teams to try to compete in a five team season” says Kam River Fighting Walleye President Derek Geddes.

Canada and the United States have extended the land border closure to non-essential traffic through October 21st.

Coming Back?

There was discussion, with the 2019/2020 season ending early due to the pandemic, whether to let 21 year olds come back and compete in the Superior International Junior Hockey League into their 22-year-old season.

That was voted down however by the members of the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL)

“You always want to see a player finish off their (junior) career and go out on their own terms, win or lose. To not have the opportunity is a tough thing for sure” adds Geddes.

In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
