City To Test On-Demand Bus Route

Expect some more changes to city transit as it slowly returns to pre-pandemic service levels.

City Council approved the latest transit service adjustments, which include raising the limit for buses to 32 passengers.

A city report says while all routes are still seeing less use compared to before the pandemic, ridership on some is increasing rapidly. Routes that are recovering well include 1, 2, 10, 13, 14, 3C, 3J and 3M. Routes 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12 and 16 are still struggling to reach their normal levels.

Route 9 (Junot) will make trips to the Intercity Shopping Centre, and Route 8 (James) will reintroduce the College to Intercity segment.

City Council is also asking for the details on testing on-demand service for route 4-Neebing, which has been running by request only in the evenings since April.

That report will come to Council by the end of this November 30, with the on-demand pilot project starting by the end of January 2021.

They are also requesting a report by late April 2021 about possibly offering similar options on other routes that aren’t performing well.
