With the size of city council expected to be debated Monday, a former councillor is weighing in.
Rene Larson came up with the current system which sees voters elect a mayor along with seven ward and five at-large councillors.
He believes the time is right to make the change explaining “My personal preference would be to see a council of six councillors and one mayor for a total of seven. I believe that would be a much more efficient functioning body.”
Larson concedes right now the number of councillors makes for meetings that go on far too long.
“I think it’s a question of looking at the overall good of the city and I think for the size of the population that we have we should try to be more efficient and have fewer councillors,” says the former council member.
Westfort Ward’s Kristen Oliver would like to see the current size reduced to nine and will ask her colleagues to direct the city administration to report back on the merits of the plan.
