School Buses Could Be Full Next Month

Don’t expect to see much change on school buses in Thunder Bay next month.

Craig Murphy is with Student Transportation Services, and points out it would be great to have 12 kids on a 70 passenger bus to maintain physical distancing, but it’s not possible. “We either remove 80% of the students ourselves from busing, that certainly wouldn’t be very popular for parents of students who have no choice but to use school busing.”

He adds the likelihood of seeing more buses, say double or triple the number, is not very high.

“Not even from a cost perspective, if those number of buses were available. You have to remember, this is happening right across the province,” says Murphy.

Student Transportation Services will have two students to a seat, possibly more, but those in Grade four and up with have to wear a mask. As well, parents are encouraged to find alternate ways of getting their kids to school, if possible, which, in turn, will ensure those who absolutely need the bus will be able.
