Five Bucks At The Door!

At one point in another life, I would voice an ad listing upcoming shows in Thunder Bay. I would say, ‘It’s a nineteen plus, five dollar at the door show’ so often that it became a running joke amongst my friends. So when I saw the title of a new documentary called ‘Five Bucks At The Door’ I was worried that someone had done an expose documentary about me!

Thankfully, that’s not the case!!

Directed by local Kristen Kosloski, ‘Five Bucks At The Door’ is an incredible history of ‘Crocks’ or ‘Crocks N Rolls’, a venue that played a seminal role not only in the music scene in Thunder Bay, but in the Canadian music scene as a whole. So many artists and bands made their way through Thunder Bay and found a venue, a meal and a place to crash with Crocks that a complete history might make one hell of a book (Hey Frank, get on that!). In the meantime, this documentary does a great job bringing the history home, and in this case, literally! Thunder Bay will have a chance to check out the documentary in September (it’s already premeiered in Calgary!) when the Vox Popular Media Arts Festival goes virtual. It will be free to stream all of the movies this year, including ‘Five Bucks At The Door’! You can check out the line up for this year’s festival, which happens September 10th-20th, here!

(Full disclosure, I am actually IN the film talking about one of my favourite Crocks moments!)

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
