Health Unit Clarifies Mask Order

Most but not all local businesses have to follow the Health Unit’s mandatory mask order starting this Friday.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janet DeMille says it’s only for enclosed spaces that are open to the general public. It is mainly aimed at indoor places where many people come and go, like banks, restaurants or grocery stores.

She says it doesn’t apply to professional services like law offices.

“If you’re not open to the public, where your doors are open and people can walk in, or you’re having appointments with individuals, this wouldn’t apply. You wouldn’t be considered an enclosed public space,”

Dr. DeMille says the focus is on promoting wearing masks, not punishing businesses, but they will follow up with any business that ignores the order.

Businesses and organizations are required to make exceptions for people who can’t safely wear a mask, for example due to breathing difficulties or if they aren’t able to safely put on and take off a mask themselves.

The Health Unit also requires businesses to let you remove your mask to eat or drink, exercise, or in a medical emergency.
