Water Rescue Site Of Previous Similar Incidents

The current condition of a 25-year-old man is still not known following a tense water rescue.

Shuniah Fire’s information officer James Brown explained Sunday’s rescue was very labour intensive in the area of the MacKenzie River north of Highway 11/17.

“It’s pretty dense bush, it’s pretty laborious being able to manage and carry all the equipment and the person out of the dense brush,” Brown said.

Shuniah Fire determined that the injured man was on the west side of the falls. Fire crews set up a staging area on the north side of the highway, just west of the MacKenzie River, and travelled north through the bush and found the patient approximately 500 metres north of the highway.

Ten Shuniah firefighters in four units, along with Superior North EMS, responded to the call.

In addition to the recent rescue, Shuniah Fire was also called to the same location for a similar incident in 2018 and a fatal swimming incident in 2013.

“It’s important to us that we get the message across that it is a dangerous activity and we don’t recommend it,” Brown added.
