Minneapolis Advances Plan To Replace Police

Minneapolis has taken another step toward replacing its police.

Last night, its City Council unanimously voted to advance a proposal to create a Department of Community Safety and Violence Prevention.

That could include what it calls licensed peace officers, but it isn’t a requirement.

For the proposal to become a reality, it needs to pass a handful of more layers of approval and can then be put on a ballot for city residents to vote on.

City leaders pledged to dismantle their police department after the protests against the killing of George Floyd by a now ex-Minneapolis police officer.
