Clinic Calls For Compassion Around Drug Use

A local health centre is trying to reduce the stigma against people who use drugs.

The NorWest Community Health Centres are marking the Global Day of Action as part of a campaign called “Support. Don’t Punish.”

It asks you to be more compassionate toward people who use substances. The clinic says stigma can affect people in many ways including lack of employment, negative feelings, and avoiding support and services.

“Stigma creates many barriers for individuals and their families who may need and would benefit from accessing necessary care and support, ” says Juanita Lawson, CEO of NorWest Community Health Centres.

Brad King is the supervisor of the centre’s safe injection site PATH525, and says “People who use substances are members of our community. They are our family members and loved ones, and deserve support, dignity and compassion. A sensible drug policy focused on health and well-being is required with solutions based in harm reduction to help elevate and empower people, instead of dehumanizing and punishing them.”

The centre and safe injection site at 525 Simpson Street have set up a booth outside their building today offering information about the campaign and about harm-reduction resources.
