Vigil To Mourn Deaths At Jail

A local group is holding a candlelight vigil to mark Indigenous People’s Day.

The community safety patrol Wiindo Debwe Mosewin says they’re remembering those who have died at the Thunder Bay jail and other prisons.

An inmate died on June 1 at the MacDougall Street institution. Organizers say they are echoing Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler’s call to shut down the Thunder Bay jail, which came after that most recent death.

They add the event is in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement against the “racist regime of policing and prisons.”

It’s happening tonight at 9 PM.
