Children’s Centre Celebrates Diversity

A new rainbow bench is being installed at Thunder Bay’s Children’s Centre Foundation in honour of Pride month and inclusion.

Executive Director Diane Walker says they hope it sends a message to everyone who comes to their organization.

“When you have things that are part of your organization that recognize difference and diversity, people feel more welcome in your organization. That bench is going to sit in our front foyer, maybe outside on nice days, but it’s a symbol of who we are and what we believe,” she explains.

The Children’s Centre official says it’s not only meant to support their LGBTQ+ clients. She points out they also want to speak against racism and other forms of discrimination.

“We really wanted to say in a really positive way that difference is important, but it doesn’t have to divide us, and it doesn’t have to cause violence. And it doesn’t have to be negative, difference is beautiful,” Walker says.

They unveiled the bench in an announcement at the Spirit Garden Friday afternoon.
