Workshop Asks “Can We Live Without Police?”

A series of workshops are being held this month to look at how Thunder Bay can better address their social issues without police involvement.

Co-organizer Max Haiven tells us it comes from calls to not involve police in mental health, substance use and other issues impacting society.

Haiven explains there was a “realization that we have asked police to solve too many of society’s problems.”

The group hopes the discussion will help start a conversation of improving our community’s resources for social issues. Community members will be discussing if there are ways we can help those on the street struggling with substance use or mental health issues that don’t involve law enforcement.

The first session is Friday evening starting at 6:30, followed by another Zoom meeting next Friday.

RiVAL: the ReImagining Value Action Lab and Wiindo Debwe Mosewin Patrol are hosting the workshops.
