Michael Gravelle is taking his case to the Ontario Minister of Transportation
The Thunder Bay MPP is upset the ministry is scrapping a study to find an alternate route in the event the Nipigon River Bridge fails.
Back in 2016 bolts on the new bridge broke forcing it to close putting a halt to traffic on the Trans Canada Highway at that location.
That resulted in a government study into possibily developing another route in the event that happens again.
A ministry official tells us “the study is being wound down as the risk of needing an alternative route over the river has significantly diminished.”
Gravelle agrees the chance of another bridge failure is remote, but he plans to ask Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney not to shelve the study anyway.
“I still believe that to be on the safe side we should have an alternate route in place just in case that does happen,” says Gravelle.
