Help Could Come To Replace Lead Pipes

If the task of replacing your lead water pipes is keeping you up at night, there could be financial assistance available from the city if council approves it Monday.

Director of Environment Services Michelle Warywoda tells us the total cost of the program would be about $50,000, which she wants to be interest free.

“We do realize it’s going to take a long time, I think there’s about 8,700 privately owned water service connections in the city, and publicly owned, we’ve got about 6,600,” says Warywoda.

She adds it could help residents replace pipe from their water metre to the property line, with the city taking care of public pipe.

“So the homeowner would enter into an agreement with us, and pay that over, say, a 5-year period,” adds the Environment Director.

She points out the loan program would provide a maximum $3,000 amount per home.

“Looking at some of the estimates we’ve received around the city, and hearing what people are paying, it seems that is a reasonable number,” points out Warywoda.
